The owner and operator of the facility, Janice Collins Farrell, is the granddaughter of the estate's original owners, Dever and Willie Lenora Collins--a true gentleman and fine lady of the Old South. Once encompassing several hundred acres, cotton and peaches were grown with the help of eleven children. The farmhouse on the property was the Collins' family home from the early 1940's until the death of Willie Lenora in 1981.
Dever Collins, one of seven children raised by William Martin Collins and Martha Underwood Collins, was born September 11, 1893 in northern Spartanburg County. Of the family, Dever's line proved to be the most prolific, with a total of eleven children. He had married Willie Lenora Crain on December 24, 1916. From the Mush Creek area of northern Greenville County, Willie Lenora was born on July 17, 1898, and was one of William Lawrence Crain and Leila Rebecca Pearson Crain's four children.
The farm family slowly accumulated land in the Motlow Creek community at the base of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, raising cotton, peaches, and garden items…especially famous for the best molasses (sorghum) around. Through droughts, hailstorms, rainy seasons, and intermittent good weather, the farm prospered and Dever amassed 300 acres. The peach shed was constructed in 1945, and housed the manual operations of washing, grading, and packaging the peaches. World War II was a tumultuous time for the Collins' clan, claiming the lives of two sons, Quentin and Glenn, within just weeks of each other.
As "Grandpa Collins" aged, the farming halted and the children had the opportunity to buy all but 30 acres of the property. Retirement found them still active in church and still growing vegetables, fruits and pecans for their own use. Blessed with many grandchildren, they lived until 1973 (Grandpa) and 1981 (Grandma).
As a tribute to their beloved grandparents, Janice Collins Farrell and her husband Jack acquired the 30 acre property in 2000 and have painstakingly renovated and rebuilt Lenora's Legacy beyond its original splendor. Lenora's Legacy is one full of cherished memories to be savored and now to be shared.
